WebDAV FAQ
This list is comprised of Frequently Asked Questions for users wanting to learn more about WebDAV and considerations for when implementing changes to the hosting of your files.
Are you a new client?
If you are a new client and have not uploaded any files, then now is a good time to consider your options. Please review the File Storage Choices and WebDAV Requirements guide to decide on the best solution for your needs.
If you chose to host the files yourself and not on our app server, then your next steps is to get that account/server setup and accessible.
With your new file server established, the next step will be to go to WebDAV Setup and enter in the new filer server type, credentials and path(s).
Once the connection is verified, you can then start uploading files via the Workamajig interface and all files will be stored on your file server.
Feel free to contact support@workamajig.com with any additional questions.
Are you an existing client (on one of our app servers) and want to change where the files are hosted?
If you are already using Workamajig and are interested in changing where you are store files. Then first review the File Storage Choices and WebDAV Requirements guide to decide on the best solution for your needs.
Currently "Attachments" are not user accessible on our app servers, only Project Files. So if you are needing to move your attachments over as well, then please contact support@workamajig.com for assistance in getting those files sent to you via an FTP site you currently have, or we can upload a ZIP file to one of your Project Files, that you can then download and place in your new Attachments directory.
Are you an existing client (hosting your own Workamajig server) and want to convert to WebDAV?
First we ask you to check that WebDAV is not already configured on your server. To verify, go to Menu > Admin > System Setup > Global Options. If you do not see a button there for "WebDAV Setup", then your server has not been converted/updated and will need to do so in order to use some of our planned features for future release.
Typically if the client is hosting the Workamajig Server, then they are already hosting the files on that same server, and simply need to move the files into the WebDAV files folder structure.
To start this process, please review the Windows Setup for WebDAV guide. One you have setup WebDAV on your server according to our specs, please inform us so that we can enable this feature on your system.
Once enabled, you can then enter the server, path and credentials into WebDAV Setup. After which time all new files will be uploaded to WebDAV.
Your IT folks can then move the old files into this new path.
Any questions, please contact support@workamajig.com.
We are hosted on our own server or other hosted solution, does this affect us?
Yes. You will need to go through the conversion process to move files into the new files system. It can still remain hosted in the same location.
We are hosted on a Workamajig app server, does this affect us?
If your files are stored on a Workamajig app server, your files have already been converted to the new system.
We are hosted on a Workamajig app server, but want to move our files to our own server or to another hosted solution?
In this case, you will need to go through the conversion process to move your files to the new location. See WebDAV and File Storage
What is required from IT Infrastructure (i.e. new server/storage provisioning)?
See File Storage
The above link describes the requirements and choices for storing files in Workamajig. If you are using an internal server, in order to allow for the full functionality of Workamajig, the URL to access the file storage server needs to be accessible from inside and outside your network.
NOTE: During the conversion process, the file storage location needs to have 1.5 times the amount of free drive space as is currently being used. Ex. If current files equal 10 GB, we will need 15 GB of free drive space to do the conversion. Once the conversion is complete, the free space will be "returned" for use.
For Box, is all access done through a single account or does each Workamajig user require their own Box account?
Workamajig only requires a single login user ID to interface with Workamajig. However, Box.net requires you to have a paid business account. This usually comes with 5 User Logins. We only need one of these login IDs.
For Box or Amazon S3, do we have to do the WebDAV setup for each user or is it a global setting for all users?
The WebDAV Settings only require a single login for access. From this login, Workamajig will provide access to the files for all Workamajig Users. Access is based upon default Security Rights setup in the WebDAV Settings screen. These can be further modified on individual projects.
How does migration of content from Workamajig occur?
Workamajig will work with your IT person to gain access to your new file storage location. Workamajig will confirm that you have followed the necessary update requirements, based upon your selected file storage location. Workamajig will then transfer the files from the current location to the new file storage location.
Can we use the Workamajig and the files area during the conversion?
There are 2 answers for this. You can continue to use All areas of Workamajig, EXCEPT, the files area. Because of the conversion process, you will not be able to upload or download files in Workamajig. This will affect Deliverable, Reviews and Attachments to Meetings, Activities, etc.
How long will the conversion take?
This really depends on the number of files that are being stored and the location of the "old" files area vs. the "new" files area. The conversion process is creating a semi-new folder structure, and then must add the files to the new structure and connect back to Workamajig. A very rough ballpark would be about 10 min per 1 GB of files.
Do we setup our WebDAV server as HTTP or HTTPS?
Make sure your server is setup as HTTPS (not HTTP) to avoid any issues with users downloading/uploading files. Most browsers have issues when you have content in a mixed (Secure/Insecure) environment, and since the Workamajig application only runs in HTTPS its best to have the file system match.
Can we recover a deleted file?
If you are using our hosted app servers for your file storage, then there is NOT a way to recover individual files that have been deleted. We do however perform multiple backups each day of all our server data, including files on our server, but this is only for the very rare case of a catastrophic server failure and the need to restore the server using the latest copy.
We suggest you review the Company Default Security section of WebDAV Setup to ensure the proper users have the proper rights to delete project files.
If you host the WebDAV File Server, then the backups of those files is your responsibility. And at that point if a file is deleted, its based on your backup methods, if you can restore the file or not. So if you perform a backup once an hour, then so long as the file was on your server for more than an hour, there is a good chance you can recover the file.
In any case, you can use the System Log to report on who deleted a file and what the files name was.
Can we host multiple file servers for specific locations?
Yes. This is done by making use of the Offices feature of Workamajig. Where you can create a project for a specific Office you have setup ahead of time. Then when you create the project for that office. All files for that project go to the server that project is designed with.
So you can have one office with a Windows Server setup, and another than uses Amazon.
NOTE: All Attachments (anything NOT uploaded to Projects > Files) is stored on the Default WebDAV Server.
